portable embedded systems applications with high computing demands. The embedded systems market consists of four segments: zero cost, zero power, zero delay, and zero volume. The overlap among zero cost, zero power, and zero delay is the “leading-edge wedge.” The leading-edge wedge includes applications in hand-held devices such as personal digital assistants and cellular telephones. In these applications, consumers want instant access to information, low cost, and long battery life. Unfortunately, the microprocessor and its cousin the digital signal processor (DSP) are designed to exploit ease of design by providing the engineer with fixed resources that can be programmed for a variety of applications. Design efficiency for the engineers costs power and computational efficiency in the application, however. I explain the concept and application of dynamic logic to applications that were once dominated by the microprocessor.
